Wynoochee Dam Drive



Come enjoy some backroads with us as we explore roads around the Wynoochee Dam. The dam is north
of Montesano and just inside the Olympic National Forest. The dam was built in 1972 and is owned by
the city of Aberdeen. On May 3rd, the day of our drive, the reservoir should be nearing full capacity.

We will meet at Safeway in Olympia, drive through Shelton, then take some backroads to Schafer State
Park on the East Fork of the Satsop River.

(Remember to bring a Discover Pass or plan to pay $10 for day use).

After leaving Schafer State Park, we will eventually arrive at Montesano and then we’ll drive almost 30
miles north on a winding back road into the National Forest until we reach the dam. At the dam you can
view the dam spillway or walk a short trail to the top of the dam where you can view the reservoir itself.
We’ll spend 30 minutes at the dam, so folks have a chance to explore a bit.

Next we will make our way on back roads to Aberdeen where we will stop for lunch. The lunch stop
has a variety of food places around including DQ, McDonalds, Happy Teriyaki, Mazatlan, and more.

After lunch we will head up to Satsop business park where you can still see the Satsop Nuclear Power
Plant or what is left of it. The plants were never finished but the towers still remain and make for a cool
backdrop for photos

After visiting the business park we will go to a rest stop along highway 12 where there are restrooms
and the drive will officially end.

Tips
- Have a full tank of gas
- Use the restroom at Safeway
- You need a discover pass for the state park (or pay $10)
- There will be some faster sections but we will regroup often
- FSR Radios Channel 5
- Be sure to bread-crumb! If you get completely separated for some reason, meet up at the next stop.
- Drive at your own pace. Let faster folks go first. Don’t feel pressured to drive faster than you are comfortable. Let folks go by (when it’s safe to do so).
